Data Delivery
Hundreds of miles in space, a series of high-tech XM satellites orbit the earth. Precisely placed in stationary orbits that keep them directly above the United States, these satellites beam XM Satellite Radio to subscribed listeners on the ground beneath.

As part of a new service called XM WX Satellite Weather, the XM fleet is also being used to beam high-resolution, real-time weather data to the continental United States and coastal waters. The weather data is supplied by the recognized experts in mobile weather analysis, WxWorx.

XM WX Satellite Weather is unique because it uses XM's S-Band satellite technology to transmit continuously-updated weather data to XM WX receivers placed in planes, vessels and other vehicles. XM WX subscribers use their laptop computers or other mobile displays to view and interact with weather parameters as essential and varied as radar, wind speed and direction, county warnings and more, all on the go.

The use of S-Band technology is a key factor and one of the defining advantages of XM WX Satellite Weather, because only the S-Band wavelength can so easily penetrate dense storm cells. For urban areas, where skyscrapers and other obstructions may impede satellite signals, terrestrial repeaters are also employed, allowing full, uninterrupted coverage at all times.

Combine those two facts with added benefit that all of the data all of the time is being transmitted by both satellites and it’s easy to see that XM WX subscribers get crucial weather information when they need it most.

The portable revolution is in good hands. To read more about this highly reliable delivery method, as well as the myriad of data products it provides, please visit the XM WX Satellite Weather home page.
