Sun ‘n Fun 2011: Viewing XM Weather Data on Tablets and Smart Phones PDF Print E-mail
March 29, 2011

XM WX Satellite Weather, featuring WxWorx-provided onboard weather data, is having a big presence at the ongoing 2011 Sun ‘n Fun Fly-In event in Lakeland, Florida. One of the greatest impacts has been Baron Services’ (the parent company of WxWorx) announcement of the new Mobile Link device.

We’re pleased that the announcement has led to so much interest and enthusiasm in the aviation community. But since the product has not yet shipped, pilots still have a lot of questions about the Mobile Link device. We’ll try to address them here.

What does the Mobile Link do?
Historically, WxWorx has provided PC-based solutions for displaying XM WX Satellite Weather data. However, we’ve heard from many of you that you’d like to have ways to use your iPads, iPhones, plus devices based on Android and other operating systems, to display the data. The Mobile Link is, basically, a device that turns XM WX data into a format that is compatible with these types of mobile devices.

How does it work?
If you already have a WxWorx portable receiver for onboard XM WX display, you’re already halfway there. Simply connect the WxWorx receiver to the Mobile Link device via USB. The USB connection also supplies power to the receiver. The Mobile Link would then wirelessly connect to your iPad, iPhone or Android device via Wi-Fi. Mobile apps developed by partnering companies would then allow you to view and interact with XM WX data on your tablet or smart phone.

Who is making apps that will work with the Mobile Link?
Initially, four providers have announced plans to offer iOS apps for XM WX Satellite Weather: Digital Cyclone, FlightPrep, Foreflight and Hilton. We’re actively working to bring even more developers onboard. Since operating system doesn't matter to the Mobile Link architecture, developers will be able to create applications for a variety of devices.

When will the Mobile Link be available?
We haven’t announced a final release date for the Mobile Link. We plan to have it available in the WxWorx online store before the end of Q2 2011.

Where can I go for more information?
