A Message from Baron: How the Weather Works PDF Print E-mail

By now, due to the widespread use of XM WX Satellite Weather, the WxWorx (pronounced “Weather Works”) brand has a lot of awareness in the aviation, marine and public safety communities. But what a lot of people don’t know is that WxWorx is just one part of a much larger company, based in Huntsville, AL, called Baron Services.

Baron has been in existence for over twenty years, starting as the innovator of street-level storm tracking systems for broadcast television. These systems allowed TV meteorologists to accurately monitor, for the first time, the movement of storms, and estimate the times of severe weather's arrival in specific communities.

From there, we increased the capabilities of our weather systems, from 3D radar display to our own line of sophisticated Doppler weather radar, plus a personal weather alerting system, SAF-T-Net.

Our teaming with XM Satellite Radio (now Sirius XM) to distribute our timely and accurate weather data over the fleet of XM satellites brought continuously broadcast aviation weather conditions to compatible displays in the cockpit, eliminating the need for request/reply weather services. This is where WxWorx comes in; it was founded during this time as the mobile weather division of Baron Services.

While the main WxWorx office operates out of Melbourne, FL, supporting dealer networks and promoting business development, meteorologists based in Baron’s Huntsville headquarters are responsible for ensuring the accuracy and integrity of the weather data going out over the fleet of XM satellites.

So what does all this mean for the WxWorx customer? Quite a bit, as it turns out. As a Baron company, WxWorx shares with its parent corporation the emphasis on accuracy and timeliness that’s so crucial to mobile weather data. And then there’s the stability that comes from having the support of a much larger foundation. We understand that whether you’re in-flight, on the water, or tracking a tornado on the ground, that core need for precision doesn’t change just because the view outside your window does. And you can count on us to work for you with that always in mind.

We’re glad you’re onboard.
